Trail Development

NOCS is preparing a Trail Development proposal for submission to BC Parks,  MOTCA and other stakeholders. If you have thoughts of a proposed trail, we would like to hear from you with as much information as possible including GPS data of the general location if possible.

Your proposal will be included in the NOCS Trail Development plan for approval. Please respond by email to okcycling@gmail.com  as soon as possible, or contact any of the board members as our proposal must be submitted for approval before the end of February if we want to have the ability to build this spring. Thanks!

NOCS is also looking for some volunteers to help out in the following areas:

•   Anyone qualified to perform impact assessments on new trails
•   Anyone with web skills who’d be willing to help update/maintain the NOCS website

If you’re interested in either of the above or know someone who might be, please email okcycling@gmail.com

postheadericon BC Hydro Community Outreach Program

Recently we applied for a grant through BC Hydro and their Community Outreach Program. Well we were successful thanks to Cynthia and received a $5,000 grant from BC Hydro just last month. They will be sending us the same grant again next year. Woo hoo! This is fantastic with more money to put into our trails.

postheadericon NOCS Update

As usual, NOCS Cosens Creek Trail Day was a success!  Our focus was Bid Ed…. 19 volunteers showed up, the weather cleared and we accomplished everything we set out to do.  We built 2 ride-arounds; one eliminating the steep climb after the old paraglide launch (beware, the top section has a tight line which crosses in front of a bear den; we still need to bridge over it) and the other one eliminates the steep rooty tight decent; although the gully line is still open if you choose to ride it.  Also, the berms on Jimmy Thang have been tweaked… so everyone have fun riding Big Ed.

NOCS will not be having any further trail days this year, so I encourage the trail bosses to ride their assigned trails before the snow falls and report any maintanence required.    Any major work required will be done with small work parties.

ON THAT NOTE … Kristopher Seiler from National Defence Canada flew out from Edmonton to talk to us on our trail day about UXO’s…. Unexploded Explosive Ordnance.  Kal Park was used as a military training centre during the wars and UXO’s may exist in Kalamalka Provincial Park…. some examples of UXO are unexploded bombs, rockets, grenades, artillery shells, flares, mortars and hazardous residues that remain after a partial detonation.   The Dept. of National Defence will be doing a sweep of Kal Park, in particular the trailed areas, next year.  In the meantime, he strongly warned us of the possibilities that UXO’s exist.  If you find something that could be a UXO please don’t touch it, remember the location and leave the area, and call 911 or the police or myself.

You may have read in the paper about a local guy, Michael Schratter, who is riding across the world for mental health.  Here is the link to the RIDE DON’T HIDE website.  You can be part of his journey and ride with him from the College to the Canadian Mental Health Association building on Thursday, be at the College at 4 pm.
